The Challenges of Aging in London – Building a Better Future for Eritrean Elders
March 12, 2024
Introduction
Aging can be challenging for anyone, but for Eritrean elders living in London, the difficulties are even greater. Many face language barriers, social isolation, and limited access to healthcare and essential services, making it difficult to maintain their well-being and independence. While IWA has always provided a safe space and informal support, we recognize that a more structured approach is needed to truly meet the evolving needs of our community.
Through strategic partnerships with Westway, OpenAge, and Pepper Pot, we are strengthening our programs and implementing a more organized system to help elders access the resources they need, stay engaged, and live with dignity.
Key Challenges Eritrean Elders Face
Language Barriers & Communication Struggles Many Eritrean elders have limited English proficiency, which makes it difficult to communicate with doctors, navigate public services, and complete paperwork. This often results in missed opportunities for financial support, healthcare, and social services, leaving many feeling frustrated and disconnected.
Difficulties Navigating UK Systems Unlike in Eritrea, where family and community play a larger role in daily life, the UK operates through structured systems that require elders to independently apply for benefits, book medical appointments, and handle official documentation. Without proper guidance, many struggle to access pension funds, housing support, and social care.
Social Isolation & Loneliness Many elders arrive in the UK later in life, leaving behind close-knit communities, lifelong friendships, and familiar cultural surroundings. This often leads to a deep sense of isolation, especially when family members are busy or live far away. Without social engagement opportunities, elders may suffer from loneliness, depression, and declining mental health.
Our Commitment to ChangeAt EEWA, we have listened to our elders, evaluated our programs, and trialed new initiatives to address these challenges. With support from Westway, OpenAge, and Pepper Pot, we are working to:
Expand our community engagement programs to ensure elders have a safe, welcoming space to connect.
Strengthen language and advocacy services to help elders navigate healthcare, benefits, and official processes.
Develop structured health and well-being initiatives to support elders with medical care, mental health, and access to digital services.
Through these efforts, we are creating a more organised, sustainable, and impactful approach to elder support in the Eritrean community.
