Introduction

For many Eritrean elders in London, navigating the NHS and accessing healthcare services is a major challenge. Language barriers, lack of digital literacy, and unfamiliarity with the healthcare system prevent many from booking appointments, understanding prescriptions, or accessing the right medical support.

While IWA has always provided informal healthcare guidance, we recognize the need to create a structured healthcare support system. By partnering with Westway, OpenAge, and Ubuntu Pledge, we are bringing in volunteer nurses, healthcare consultants, and medical support services to ensure our elders receive the care they need.

Challenges Elders Face in Accessing Healthcare

  1. Language & Communication Barriers
Many elders do not speak English fluently, making it difficult to explain symptoms to doctors, read prescriptions, or follow medical advice. Without interpreters or support, they often miss out on crucial care.
  2. Difficulties Booking & Attending Appointments
With many NHS services now online, elders struggle to book appointments, access test results, or request repeat prescriptions. Mobility challenges also make it hard for some elders to attend their medical appointments alone.
  3. Managing Chronic Conditions
Many elders suffer from diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, and other age-related illnesses that require continuous monitoring. However, due to a lack of understanding of treatment plans and poor follow-up, some elders fail to manage their health effectively.

Building a Better Healthcare Support System

At IWA, we are working with medical professionals, community partners, and volunteers to improve healthcare access for elders. Our new initiatives include:

  • Bringing in volunteer nurses to assist elders with health concerns, medication management, and general well-being.
  • Providing NHS digital training to help elders book medical appointments and access healthcare information online.
  • Expanding home visit support, ensuring elders with mobility challenges receive medical assistance at home.

By creating a structured healthcare support network, we are empowering elders to take control of their health and ensuring they receive the care they deserve.
