Introduction

Transportation is a major obstacle for many elders in London, limiting their ability to attend medical appointments, social gatherings, and community events. Many rely on family members or struggle with public transport due to mobility issues, unfamiliarity, or financial concerns.

While IWA has supported elders informally, we now recognize the need for a structured transportation assistance program. Working with Pepper Pot, Westway, and other partners, we are developing transport solutions to ensure elders can access healthcare, social clubs, and essential services without difficulty.

Common Transportation Challenges for Elders

  1. Mobility Issues & Accessibility
Many elders struggle with arthritis, joint pain, and vision impairments, making it difficult to use buses, trains, or even walk to their destinations.
  2. Unfamiliarity with Public Transport
Navigating bus routes, train schedules, and ticketing systems is difficult for elders who have not grown up using these services.
  3. Financial Barriers
While free travel passes are available for elders, many do not know how to apply for them or face difficulties in accessing affordable transport options.

Our Plan to Improve Transportation Access

IWA is working to implement sustainable transport solutions for elders, including:

  • Coordinating with volunteer drivers to provide door-to-door transport for elders attending medical appointments and community events.
  • Offering travel training sessions to teach elders how to use public transport confidently.
  • Working with funding partners to subsidize transport costs for elders who need financial support.

By making transportation more accessible, we are ensuring that elders remain socially engaged, independent, and connected to the services they need.
