Introduction

Loneliness is one of the biggest concerns for Eritrean elders in London. Many have left behind their communities, traditions, and lifelong friends, and adjusting to a new way of life in the UK can be overwhelming.

At IWA, we recognize that social connection is just as important as physical health, and we are committed to expanding and strengthening our Senior Social Club and community programs.

How Loneliness Affects Elders

  • Loss of Community & Cultural Identity – Being away from Eritrea means fewer cultural gatherings and social interactions, leading to a sense of loss and disconnection.
  • Limited Opportunities to Engage – Many elders lack spaces to meet and socialize, especially as public places become less accessible due to mobility challenges or language barriers.
  • Mental & Emotional Health Decline – Studies show that social isolation increases the risk of depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline in elders.

Building a More Connected Future

With support from Westway and Pepper Pot, we are:

  • Expanding our Senior Social Club to provide a regular, structured space for elders to connect, share stories, and build friendships.
  • Organizing more cultural events to celebrate Eritrean traditions, music, and community heritage.
  • Introducing intergenerational programs to bridge the gap between young Eritrean Britons and their elders, fostering shared learning and understanding.

Through these efforts, EEWA is ensuring that elders remain engaged, valued, and socially connected.
