The Future of Digital Inclusion – Bringing Eritrean Elders Online
March 12, 2024
Introduction
Technology has transformed the way we communicate, access services, and manage our daily lives, but many elders struggle to keep up with these digital advancements. From booking medical appointments online to using mobile banking, digital exclusion has become a major challenge for Eritrean elders in London.
At IWA, we recognize that bridging the digital divide is essential to ensuring that elders remain independent and engaged. With the help of Ubuntu Pledge and Westway, we have trialed digital training programs and are now working to develop a long-term strategy for digital inclusion.
Challenges of Digital Exclusion for Elders
Lack of Access to Devices Many elders do not own smartphones, tablets, or computers, making it difficult to complete everyday tasks such as checking emails, booking transport, or accessing online health records.
Fear & Lack of Confidence Many elders express hesitation and fear when using technology, worried that they might press the wrong button, make a mistake, or fall victim to online scams. This lack of confidence discourages them from even attempting to learn.
Language & Navigation Barriers Most digital platforms are designed for English-speaking users, making it difficult for elders who speak Tigrinya or Arabic to navigate healthcare websites, government portals, and online forms.
Our Digital FutureWith the support of Ubuntu Pledge, Westway, and OpenAge, we are now implementing a structured digital inclusion program that includes:
One-on-one training sessions to teach elders how to use smartphones and access essential services online.
Workshops on NHS digital services, helping elders book GP appointments, order prescriptions, and communicate with doctors online.
A dedicated digital support team to assist elders with troubleshooting, answering questions, and building confidence in using technology.
By providing hands-on support and a safe learning environment, IWA is empowering elders to embrace technology and improve their independence.
